Why Sedation Dentistry Might Be Right for You

If you avoid going to the dentist out of fear, you’re not alone! Dental phobia is much more common than many would expect. There is a common fear associated with the dentist office, thanks to Hollywood or personal experience with an unprofessional dentist. The difference is mostly in how experienced a dentist you choose to work with, but dental phobia can go beyond a physiological roadblock. The truth of the matter is, if you fail to go to your biannual checkups or wait until your tooth pain becomes unbearable, you run the risk of making a small problem into a bigger one. Sedation dentistry may be your saving grace. With a few on the market, you may wonder which one is best for you, so read on to find out!

Which Type of Sedation Dentistry Should I Choose?

If your procedure is long or complex, or maybe you have a psychological or physiological reason that you may need sedation dentistry, the three main choices of said services can appeal to you based on your individual circumstances.

  • Inhalation Sedation (Laughing Gas) – This is the most common form of sedation dentistry in which a combination of nitrous oxide and oxygen is inhaled through the nostrils, not lasting long after treatment.
  • Oral Conscious Sedation – A prescribed pill taken one hour before your procedure allows you to remain conscious but in a very calm and relaxed state giving you the least anxious experience possible.
  • IV Sedation – The anesthesia is administered by board-certified dental anesthesiologists and allows you to completely fall asleep during your procedure. Just be sure to get a ride home from a family member or a friend after treatment.
