The year was 1999. Dr. Svetlana Gomer, her husband Dr. Mikhael Gomer, and 1 year old daughter had moved to Cleveland, OH from their home, Ukraine. They had no work and spoke very little English. Although they had support form their local community, they were compelled to grasp and hold on to their yearning desire deep within. A desire for a life not present, yet visible in their dreams. Having earned their degrees in dentistry prior to coming to the United States, Dr. Gomer and her husband had to apply and attend dental school all over again in order to practice. Dedicated to their craft, they both slowly picked up the pieces and worked their way back to what it is they felt that they were meant to do. “My husband and I love our profession. It was a no-brainer for us to take the chance and go for what we wanted – to practice in a country we now consider home, a country we love. We are very fortunate and happy to be able to live and work in the United States.”
Dr. Gomer is now a successful businesswoman, owning a flourishing practice in Tewksbury, MA with her husband. Having graduated from Boston University Dental School, she and her husband decided to settle and practice in Massachusetts. “The journey here wasn’t an easy one. It was difficult but necessary. I remember a time when I was a dental assistant. I learned a lot about myself – that I can accomplish anything if I put my mind to it. That I am not too proud and am willing to do whatever it takes to live a beautiful life with my family. I also gained perspective. I remember meeting lovely people from all different backgrounds. Coming from Ukraine, I didn’t have this pleasure of learning about different cultures. At my job, I was exposed to different cuisines and languages. My coworkers and I would share each others food over our lunch break. It was really beautiful. To this day we keep in touch. I also feel like this experience has helped me become a better practitioner, as I am more able to appreciate and connect with my patients.” Dr. Gomer has been told several times that her chair side manner is exceptional, as she pays close attention to her patients needs and aims to be as gentle as possible. “I enjoy getting to know my patients, learning about their life experiences, and how they spend their time. This is also important for me so that I am more able to meet their expectations and create realistic goals that we can both achieve, together.”
What drew Dr. Gomer to dentistry initially was her passion for healthcare. Eventually, she also found that she was intrigued by the unique combination of art and science, an integral part of dentistry. As she has progressed through her career, Dr. Gomer has trained extensively in Cosmetic and Rehabilitative Dentistry. She is the first dentist in Massachusetts to become a Bioclear certified dentist. Dr. Gomer explains: “Bioclear is a term used to describe a method designed to create beautiful veneers, at a minimally invasive level. I have always disliked the removal of healthy tooth structure in order to place conventional veneers. I have taken several courses to find a way to provide a high level of cosmetic dentistry yet at a conservative level. It wasn’t until I learned the Bioclear Method that it all clicked. Now I am excited and feel at ease providing this treatment because I know that I am providing a great service to my patients.” In addition to being Bioclear certified, Dr. Gomer is also Invisalign certified as well.
These days Dr. Gomer makes sure to live each day to the fullest. Dancing and singing are a regular activity in her day to day life. She is passionate about health and exercise, and believes that if she did not become a dentist that she probably would have ended up a fitness instructor. To this day, she is still madly in love with her husband. “He is my soulmate. He makes me laugh all the time. He can tell me the same joke over and over and I’ll crack up every time. I am very lucky to be on this journey called life with him.” Dr. Gomer and her husband love to cook and entertain. “We enjoy having our friends and family over. We will go all out and have charades, prizes, singing and dancing. In the end, its all about creating beautiful memories to look back on.” She is a wonderful mother to her daughter Polina and son Sam.
Dr. Gomer never fails to remember the journey that brought her to where she is now. She never ceases to appreciate her hard work and all the bounty that has come from it. “For me, I just try to be grateful in each and every moment. I count my blessings every day. That is my choice. Because the reality is, life is too short not to.”
