Sedation Dentistry

If you’re afraid of the dentist, you’re not alone. Dental anxiety is incredibly common, especially before a big procedure such as a wisdom tooth extraction or a root canal. At MGS Dental, we offer different types of sedation to help eliminate feelings of anxiety and allow you to experience your procedure in a calm and pain-free manner. Here are just some of the sedation dentistry options that we provide:

IV (Intravenous) Sedation

IV sedation is a very effective form of dental anxiety treatment that allows the patient to become sedated very quickly as well as allow the dentist to adjust the amount of sedative easily. IV sedation dentistry works by making a small insertion into a vein, usually into your arm, and trickling a small amount of sedative into the bloodstream. This form of dental anxiety treatment is great for patients with severe dental anxiety since it works quickly, and it offers a high level of sedation so that many patients don’t even remember the procedure whatsoever.

Here is what you need to know before your IV sedation appointment:

1. You must have a responsible adult accompany you to the appointment and drive you home at the end of the recovery period in the office. You will be unable to leave the office alone.

2. Please do not eat or drink anything for 8 hours prior to your appointment. There is a risk for stomach contents entering your respiratory system if this rule is not followed.

3. If you take medications at a time prior to the appointment, you make take them with a small amount of water. Please notify Dr. Gomer of any medications you have taken prior to the appointment.

4. Please wear loose fitting garments and a short sleeve upper garment. This will not only allow you to be comfortable during your procedure, it will allow ease of breathing, and access for your IV and monitoring equipment .

5. Please arrive no later than 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment.

6. If you develop a cold, flu, sore throat, cough or any other illness, please advise our office prior to your appointment.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, often referred to as “laughing gas,” is a safe, hypoallergenic sedation method that consists of a mix of a nitrogen and oxygen gases. The sedation works by decreasing dental anxiety, allowing you to feel like you’re in a calmer, euphoric state after inhaling the gas mixture.

NuCalm

NuCalm is a form of sedation that uses a combination of technologies instead of drugs to ease dental anxiety. NuCalm works by mimicking the natural conditions that your brain experiences when you are falling asleep. To learn more about NuCalm and how it can help your dental anxiety, visit nucalm.com.
