Teeth Whitening

Tooth whitening, also called bleaching, is a procedure that brightens teeth that are discolored, stained, or have been darkened because of injury.

Whitening treatment may be done completely in the dental office or the dentist may dispense a system for you to use at home. At MGS Dental we use Opalescence Boost chairside whitening system.

Before applying it to your teeth, dentist will place a protective barrier on your gums. Then the thin layer of Opalescence Boost will be placed on the surface of your teeth for 20 minutes. The gel will then be removed and reapplied for a final 20 minutes.

Another way of whitening your teeth is home –use bleaching. In this case a custom – fitted mouthguards are fabricated and worn daily or nightly for about two weeks

What causes tooth discoloration?

Many factors make teeth lose their luster. Genetics is one of them; some people just have whiter teeth than others.

Other factors include cigarettes, dark foods and beverages (including coffee, tea, and red wine), age, medications, and tooth trauma.

How does teeth whitening works?

The active ingredient in most teeth whiteners is some form of peroxide. Oxygen molecules from the peroxide penetrate the tooth and break down discolored molecules.

Will whitening cause tooth sensitivity?

Some people experience sensitivity while whitening, but many do not. Sensitivity does not mean damage has been caused to your teeth. It is temporary and typically disappears within a few days of treatment.

How long whitening effect lasts?

Whitening results typically last up to a year. If your teeth start to discolor again over time, you can simply repeat a whitening treatment.
